We hear so often "I love that Restoration Hardware look, but just can't afford it!" Roots has found that look for a fraction of the cost and keeping with our "green goals" the pieces are Missouri-made. The table is pine and quartersawn oak and finished with an oil and water polyurethane blend which makes it extremely durable. The hardware (square nails and carriage bolts) are antique. It measures 60" long x 31" wide. This truly is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind table. The log end tables are finished to a beautiful patina. They are solid walnut, and measure 24"x12" and 15.5"x12". Just got our Country Living magazine yesterday, and they have repurposed log seating on the cover! So here's the best news, we want to work with this local craftsman and we want to give our customers a fair price! Win-win-win.

We named our store ROOTS for a very specific reason. We have been blessed to have not only a large family, but a particularly close one as well. Spending time together is one of our favorite joys. That being said, with all of our kids growing up, getting them home and all of us together is not as easy as it once was. So, in order to take advantage of their being home, we have decided that we will close the shop from December 22nd through December 29th this year. (We will be open on Dec. 17, 20 and 21 and again on Dec. 30 & 31 --regular hours 10am-4pm)

We hope you know how much we appreciate your loyalty and continued support of ROOTS. We could not do what we love to do without you. We hope you all have the merriest of holiday seasons and we look forward to seeing you at the end of 2011 and on into the New Year!

BOWLS

bowl...(definition loosely interpreted by Roots!)...a rather deep, round (well, not always) dish or basin, used chiefly for holding stuff. We have a nice selection of bowls (large and small)... ironstone, yellow ware, zinc (?), wooden. And, we always have great "stuff" to fill bowls! Coming soon...a selection of locally fabricated metal wall art. These are unique and lovely pieces. We will get photos uploaded as soon as they are here in the shop! (hopefully early week of Oct. 3)

Kim is not only creative visually, but she writes beautifully as well. She says..." I like to mix elements of nature. Lots of wood, plants & metal grouped with original artwork. Either my own, made by friends or collected during my travels. All items collected over time. They have found a very cohesive home together. On the vintage bamboo table I have a metal box found at Roots. It creates another level on the table scape to keep the eye moving and provides a place to store away all of the "things" we use in our everyday lives that aren't so pretty on display. On the dining room sideboard I have a variety of collected items. Another metal box found at Roots (currently storing napkins) and an old glass fishing float (also from Roots) paired with stoneware ink bottles dug on a building site in England..." As you can see, Kim has a true gift for repurposing and displaying her finds. We are lucky she haunts Roots!

Jen and Adam were inspired and quickly saw the potential in these old "industrial" pieces. The blue metal chair just pops against the warm brick wall. The cart provides the most unique surface to display treasures. We love their vision and this creative space!

Mark uses bits and pieces of old metal, plastic, wood and paper to create his one-of-a-kind pieces of art. They are filled with whimsey and color, and little details that just make us smile. He is often in the shop looking for a very specific "something" that will find its way into some wonderful collage of found objects. We are so thrilled that he shared some of his work with us!

We all love it when the Johnson family comes to the shop! Mom has a great eye and she has taught the boys to think creatively and appreciate the old and repurposed. The architectural remnant above the bed is downright beautiful. The wall of D's and rusty "art" is fun and all have been collected, over time, by a master bargain hunter! The metal "memo board" is a perfect way to display art and photos, tickets, ribbons and other memories. Thanks Johnsons for sharing your creativity!

This is one perfect use for an old frame. Dustin is a collector of many, many interesting items, and he loves the graphics of old posters and advertising. He bought this simple, vintage frame at Roots, stuck his fun, old poster in it and voila! instant art!

This great line up is from our customer, Meg. She's been collecting nutmeg tins for years, with her most recent acquisition and the perfect shelf to display some of her favorites coming from Roots! Her apartment is full of charm, from the stacked stools holding plants, old game boards and tins (note: with a star theme), to the warm and inviting fireplace decked out with artwork created from found pieces (many from Roots). This is creativity at its finest.

Great deal on entertainment piece!

Great solid wood (cherry?) entertainment piece! The piece measures 59"wide x 47.25" tall x 21" deep. The opening for the TV is generous 30+" wide and 27" tall.

This piece, while fabulous, just doesn't fit in our shop, and we need the room to bring in a couple more unique pieces. We are willing to let it go for $145. Please come in and see how nice this entertainment center is!

These are two wonderful examples of early to mid-20th century Americana.

Our shop is located in Maplewood’s old Moose Hall, so we have quite a fondness for these wonderful pieces. The smaller piece is lit from within its metal shadow box and measures approx. 17” wide x 15” tall ($72.00) The larger piece is framed and measures approx. 36” wide x 30” tall ($62.00)

“MOOSEHEART CHILD CITY & SCHOOL is a community and school for children and teens in need located about 38 miles west of Chicago. The history of Mooseheart Child City & School is inextricably intertwined with that of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Women of the Moose, two organizations whose stupendous growth during the first quarter of the 20th century was inspired by the idea of creating this beautiful home and community for children in need.  ”

You will notice the clock set to 9 pm in each of the pieces. The fraternity’s Nine O’clock Ceremony was first depicted in oil for distribution to Lodges in the early 1930s, with a Mooseheart child saying a bedtime prayer.

Flower frogs, vintage letters, signs...

Our flower frog collection continues to "blossom". We have a wide array! Flower frogs reached their heyday in the U.S. in the mid 1920's and 30's. How the term "frog" came into general use remains a mystery. What we do know is--they have become a funky and inexpensive collectible. We've also added more vintage letters and some fabulous new signs and advertising pieces.

It's that time of year again. Time to play ball, eat hot dogs, drink a cold beer and watch (or listen) as the Cardinals start their march to capture the NL Pennant and the World Series. Yes, Albert is ready for the season but the question is, are you? Well Roots is ready and if you need a little push, you might want to try spicing up your garden or planters with "redbird" stakes. Made of wood and hand painted (no two are alike) you can stick one in a potted plant on your porch or deck and you'll be amazed at how that wonderful "Cardinal" red draws your eye. To round out your theme (no pun intended) add a basket of old baseballs and softballs near your planter. You might just find yourself grabbing one and heading out to the backyard for a game of catch with the kids.

Duck Pin

Ever hear of Duck Pin bowling? Well, it started at the turn of the century. Most bowling alleys were only open in the winter but those few that stayed open in the summer devised a new game using smaller balls. As the game evolved, its creators took the old regular sized bowling pins and actually had them cut down to a smaller size to accommodate the smaller ball. Giving the game its own set of rules and regulations, and setting the pins up in the flying "V" formation of ducks, created a new sport.

Try using a trio of them to spruce up your bookshelf or table top. They not only give a space some vertical color and dimension, but they create a topic of historic conversation as well. After all, how many of your friends have ever heard of Duck Pin Bowling?

Ah, 3-ball in the corner pocket?

Billiard balls. They're round, they're colorful, they're smooth, they're cool looking and they make an interesting centerpiece.

Okay, they're odd to have just lying around, but there is something magical about having them out their usual context. After all, green felt is not all that flattering to them. Might we suggest a bowl (as shown) or in a line on a shelf or....well it's obviously gonna be up to you.

Nonetheless, men, kids and large egg-bearing birds will be drawn to them once you get them home.

Are we having fun yet? Sure we are. Especially since we just brought in LOTS of these vintage Drive-In Movie Marquee Sign letters. How you can you not have fun with these plastic letters, they harken from an era of "The Swamp Thing" and "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang" and piling your car up with your friends and stuffing a few in the trunk.

The letters are 10 inches tall and made of heavy black plastic. We love letters of all shapes and sizes, materials, and colors. And, if you're not into letters but have a fascination with numbers, we have a few selections of those as well.
